Recency/Currency Requirements

1) A pilot must have acted as pilot-in-command or as a co-pilot within the last 5 years

if not, then the pilot must:

  • Complete a flight review in accordance with the personnel licensing standards, conducted by the holder of a flight instructor rating for the same category of aircraft.
  • The flight instructor that has conducted the review has certified in the holder’s personal log that the holder meets the skill requirements for the issuance of the permit or license set out in the personal licensing standards.
  • The holder has successfully completed the appropriate examination specified in the personal licensing standards. (PSTAR) (CARs 421.05)

2) Within the last 2 years, a pilot must have completed on of the following:

  • Attended a safety seminar conducted by Transport Canada and have the logbook certified as such.
  • Participated in an approved recurrent training program.
  • Completed a training program or PPC.
  • Completed the requirements for the issue of a permit, license or rating.
  • Completed the written exam for a permit, license or rating.
  • Completed a flight review with a licensed instructor.
  • Completed the self-paced study program issued annually by Transport Canada.

    3) In order to carry passengers, a pilot must have completed 5 take-offs within the the last 6 months (by night, if the flight is to be conducted at night)
